Holiday books, beach reading - Mariatu Kamara, Mark Haddon and Camille O Cosby

One thing I love about holidays is reading on a beach with no distractions for hours on end, only stopping to refill on water, margaritas or banks beer, my recent trip aboard was much the same I had the pleasure and time to read three books, the first I came across after listening to an interview on BBC radio four of the Sierra Leone war survivor, Mariatu Kamara – Mariatu’s book is about her journey and surviving, she is now a spokes person for UNICEF Canada on the impact of war on children http://www.mariatufoundation.com/   http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1408805197 - a great read, a story of hope.

A spot of bother by Mark Haddon http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0099506920 - I have read this before but picked it up again to have a good old chuckle, funny and well written.

A Wealth of Wisdom by Legendary African-American Elders Speak by Camille O. Cosby  http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0743482298 - A book for every home for young and old  readers, it inspires, thought, creativity, ambition and with  a continued message that you can achieve anything you put your mind too.

Fighting Fit Fencing, Groupon, This glorious City

Well with moving back to this glorious city and enjoying all that there is to offer it gets tough trying to fit everything in, having time to blog and write about what I have been up to gets a bit by the way side, after starting a fencing course at fightingfitfencing.com with a discounted ticket through Groupon I'm on the last week of my four week course, it has been an interesting journey and because it has been something I have wanted to do for so long, I have both find it enjoyable, great cardiovascular and brilliant for concentration, here are some photo of me in action on my third lesson, learning a new skill is always challenging which I really love.

Fencing
Being kitted up for a point scoring match, the vest is made of a conductive material and the sword which is called a foil has tip  which is connected to a wire through the sleeve and then connected to the back of the suit, a touch is scored by hitting on target which on the torso area

Snow Sunday, its feels strange to me when it snows in February and you walk past people singing Christmas carols, has climate change made this much of a difference that our seasons are way behind, the queue in shoe zone with every second person buying wellies was slightly mad, but cool at the same time. I was standing in the queue and got taking to a lady about the book I was reading 'The girl with the dragon tattoo by Steig Larrson', we ended up talking about the trilogy as I was on the last chapter and I commented on how well written the books were, if I had a kindle in my hand, no one could see the book cover only the words on a screen, I think my agreement is this - books are lovely and a great conversation piece, especially if a cute boy or girl is reading, great ice breaker!

New rope class, My Aerial Home, Circus Skills

Its been a long time coming but I have started back aerial training, this time learning rope which is similar to silks at a new circus school in New Beckenham called My Aerial home, you can follow them on Twitter here.
Here are a few photos of my second class, I am learning something called ankle hang, looks painful but not so bad at all, quite enjoyable really.

My problem with modern art

Reading this funny article in November’s Stylist. On the pages,
Elsewhere - a world news briefing in one compact page - I got to
thinking about an experience I had whilst at college, I didn't agree
with an exhibition we had gone to see and questioned whether it was
art, the story is set in Germany.

A cleaner accidentally ruined a $1 million (£625,000) piece of art in
the Ostwall museum in Dortmund by removing what she thought was a 'stain'.
'When it starts dripping from the ceiling' featured wooden planks and
a discoloured plastic bowl. The late Martin Kippenberger intended it
to look as though the bowl has been stained by water which the
cleaner decided to tackle. A Damien Hirst work - which featured
ashtrays half full, coffee cups and beer bottles - was similarly
cleaned up in 2001 by a cleaner at London's
Eyestorm gallery. So my question is this if a cleaner doing there job
makes these kind of mistakes, what hope is there for the rest of us to
decipher ‘modern art’.

Modern art sometimes a mystery to me.

Kind regards
